Hello all club presidents and VI Regional Board members please forward this invite to Stroke & Turn training to your membership.
Thank you,
Hello to all New and returning Officials and others interested in officiating,
In preparation for the swim season I will be hosting a Stroke & Turn Clinic, Friday June 6th at 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
This clinic will be delivered online (MS Teams) where I will be going over slides and videos based on the presentation available on the BCSSA website. This will provide both a good introduction to those new or relatively new to officiating as well as a good refresher for more experienced officials. Please invite anyone interested and encourage those who don’t think they want to officiate to attend to learn about the role of officials at a swim meet, everyone is welcome.
Ideally, we would have in person seasons and have swimmers demonstrate some examples of legal and illegal strokes & turns for the various strokes. In lieu of that, I have provided links to several video clips which demonstrate each stroke and common infractions or disqualifications.
If you are new to Officiating it is standard practice for new or less experienced officials to shadow a more experienced official during the first meet or two, to gain experience and confidence in observing and recording disqualifications. The following videos are a good introduction to common DQs seen during meets. Please be aware there are some differences between these videos and BCSSA rules.
Breaststroke (536) How to officiate breaststroke - YouTube
Butterfly (536) How to officiate butterfly - YouTube
Difference in permitted kicks - BCSSA “The swimmer may use the ‘dolphin’ or ‘whip’ or ‘frog’ kick and may switch from one to the other at will.
Backstroke (536) How to officiate backstroke - YouTube
At turn - sculling back to wall if missed on turn - (BCSSA rule pg 59). “A swimmer may scull back to touch the wall to complete the turn if the wall is missed.”
Freestyle (536) How to officiate freestyle - YouTube
Totally submerged at the finish? Legal? Illegal?
Individual Medley (IM) (536) How to officiate the individual medley - YouTube
Relays (536) How to officiate swimming relays - YouTube
Be sure to read through BCSSA rules paying particular attention to section 4.5.5 The Race — General (starting on page 40 of the speed swimming rule book) which includes the sections covering the rules for each stroke as well as the Individual Medley and Relays.
Please join me for a couple of hours of fun and learning so we can make this a great swim season for our kids.
Sincerely,
Brent Postlethwaite - VI Regional Director of Officials
P.S. I have also attached a quiz which we will go over at the end of the clinic. Answers are included but not all the answers are obvious and we can discuss further when we work thru the quiz together, sometimes there is more than one right answer.
